"His pottery reflects his love of nature, with muted colors of green and blue from the salt firing process melding with the earthen reddish brown of his vases, cups and decorative pieces." -- Chris Worthy, Sandlapper Magazine, Spring 2008. In addition to his mastery of the potter's wheel, Don has made a name for himself in the study of Phausis reticulata -- an unusually rare firefly species-- that exists on his 122 acres near Cleveland, SC. As a result of their discovery and presence, and to protect them for the future, Don started a nonprofit organization, Friends of the Firefly Forest, and has worked with Upstate Forever to grant a conservation easement on his property. Having studied and observed these tiny creatures for 35 years, Don is considered "the world's authority" on the subject. Trillium Arts Centre 319 S. All Fired Up! Jan. 15th- Feb. 27th Opening Reception Sat. Jan. 16th 7:00pm South Carolina's upstate mountains are home to potter and preservationist Don Lewis. A 1961 graduate of Furman University, Don is a subsistence potter and sculptor whose work includes national and international juried competitions sponsored by the American Federation of Arts, the American Crafts Council, and the Smithsonian Institution. He received his pottery training at Marguerite Wildenhain's Pond Farm Workshop in Guerneville, California. Admirers have come from all over the globe to purchase Lewis' works because of its unique firing and glazing qualities. His clays consist of blends of several different clays, to achieve plasticity, texture, and color. Don prefers a traditional kick wheel except for large pieces he uses an electric wheel. |
